A story worth living is a lifeline. Here are some real-life examples that are happening.
We create our lives and culture through stories. We live (and die) by our stories.
Our dominant Western cultural story says that “matter creates matter” and that “matter is the only thing that ‘matters’”, so “we have to compete, fight, and struggle for survival.”
Sound familiar?
That current cultural story is killing us.
Our lives and culture are unraveling and breaking down because we’re living by upside-down, backwards stories and beliefs.
So, what to do? In this 5-min. video Dr. Bruce Lipton says these beliefs are false because quantum physics shows that the invisible energy field is what shapes and shifts matter. That invisible energy field is shaped by our minds and thoughts, so we are creators, a creative force in this.
That means we are not victims. We have agency and choice in this. We can create different Life-aligned cultural stories and beliefs. That’s our critical work now.
It’s time for us to create a heart and soul-based cultural story worth living to give us a lifeline through the chaos now! A story worth living reflects the higher, deeper truth of our Being, not just our “doings.”
Here are some real-life, on-the-ground examples of that kind of lifeline, a heart and soul-based story worth living:
In his Post-election Advice from a Troll, John Perkins writes:
“. . . this community, like so many, bought into the story that success is measured by maximizing materialistic consumption and short-term profits. . . . All you have to do is create a new story. . . . Imagination. It’s all about the stories you share. Time to re-imagine yourselves – become magicians, agents of change. . . .Writing is storytelling, isn’t it? Magic that changes reality. . . .write about what this community can do to create an Ecological Civilization. Be a model. Magic is fun. . .”
“Here’s the poster and a link to a movement that is destined to change the world – one community at a time.
“We are residents of the Bainbridge Island and Camano Island communities who are concerned for the planet and engaging in grass-roots organizing to make a difference.
“It is our mission to refrain from thinking of what we should be doing, and move into action – both in thoughts and deeds – to make our planet and humanity a better place. We hope you will join us on this endeavor.”
Can you imagine how this idea could be used in your local or regional community?
Richard Flyer describes a “symbiotic culture” in which mutually beneficial relationships and collaborations among diverse groups of people, from family to neighborhood to community, nation, and planet, become the norm.
That’s a heart and soul-based cultural story aligned with Life because the essence of Symbiotic Culture is intentional and conscious mutual benefit embodied in all our interactions.
It’s a delivery system for “Connecting the Good,” about "connecting the good in each community into an effective power for system change —reflecting what’s happening in natural ecosystems." (Emphasis mine)

A gift economy and culture is still another example. Indigenous cultures have been living this way for millennia. Robin Wall Kimmerer eloquently describes this culture in her new book The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World as well as in her earlier book Braiding Sweetgrass. Charles Eisenstein has been using a gift economy model for his business for a number of years.
Filmmaker Damon Gameau points out in his TED Talk that humans continue to do what we have been doing because the facts don’t matter if they don’t fit the story we’re living by. He gives examples of a Life-aligned, heart and soul-based cultural story we could embody,
Then he concludes:
“. . . Nobody knows how this new but old story ends because it is still being written. But if it is to have the Hollywood ending, if we are to break free from our cultural programming and pull off the miraculous comeback when all seems lost, then the new but old story will have to be rapidly spread throughout the culture. Because stories shape culture. Culture shapes leaders, leaders shape policies, and policies shape the system.”
A final note: These transformational times are not just a speed bump because the path that brought us here goes no further. This requires us to create our new path as we go.
This where Life is heading, and it’s where I’m heading as well. This is my passion. Are you headed this way, too? Please Let me know of other examples of Life-aligned, heart and soul-based cultural stories you’re aware of.
